MY PARIS GARDEN

Around the corner from my apartment runs “La Petite Ceinture” (The Little Belt), an abandoned railroad track circling Paris in ravines, tunnels and bridges. It was built in the mid-19th century to transport merchandise within the city and then used as a passenger train until 1934. The embankment near me was fenced in and overgrown until about 7 years ago when a neighborhood group got authorization from the mayor’s office to create a collective garden. For a nominal fee, I have a 2 by 2.5 meter plot (there are about 50 plots), access to garden tools plus friendly advice.

Each year I experiment with herbs, vegetables or flowers. The fenced-in area is open to the public two afternoons a week and our association organizes Easter egg hunts, seed exchanges, musical happenings …Vive le vert !
