NEW YORK CONTRASTS

My first visit to New York in April after two and a half years was a whirlwind of social and cultural activities. I loved the cleaner subways, often with art installations. Tourists are everywhere, especially the French ! Trendy Brooklyn is spreading further afield to neighborhoods like Cobble Hill or Gowanus Canal - I took the G train for the first time in my life, a novelty for this former Manhattan-ite !

What struck me were the contrasts between grandiose and intimate : a potted wisteria near the Flat Iron Building on 23th Street and 5th Avenue, a baseball game in Central Park against a backdrop of skyscrapers or an oversized memorial to a local fish store owner in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn ... New York never ceases to surprise us !
