CALIFORNIA ICONS

My trip to the American West Coast over the holidays was mostly about seeing family but, as usual being a “foreigner”, I enjoy having an objective take on local habits. Spending a week in the “Berkeley Bubble”, the affectionate term for the legendary – and often quirky - California university city across the bay from San Francisco, means being immersed in the eclectic tastes and lifestyles of its original inhabitants. One notorious front lawn in my brother’s neighborhood has an odd mix of life-size statues ranging from icons to animals. Houses built in the 20’s and 30’s seem to be right out of a fairytale in cheerful colors with storybook turrets. Another local resident created holiday decorations out of tree bark.

A three-day hiatus to Seattle and the blustery air of Puget Sound was a welcome break after the New Year festivities.
